日本の労働者たちへ：家に帰って子作りしろ

Before you get to the front door of Canon’s headquarters in Tokyo, you can hear it - a virtual stampede of employees pouring out of the building right at 5:30pm. You might think it’s not so unusual. The day is over and workers should go home, right? But this is Japan, where the 12 hour workday is the norm. Sure, you can go home at 5:30pm, but you better pack your guilt with your briefcase. That is, except at Canon, twice a week.

At Canon, the company shuts off the lights and turns off the heat to force employees out by 5:30pm. There are two reasons - to cut overtime, but also an unusual one: to encourage employees to have more babies.

東京にあるキヤノン本社の正門に着く前に，それを聞くことができる．ちょうど午後5時30分に，従業員たちがビルから一斉に出てくる音だ．珍しくも無い，と思うかもしれない．仕事は終わり，労働者は家に帰る，そうだろう？　しかし，ここは日本である．1日12時間の労働が普通の場所だ．確かに5時30分に帰ることができるが，その場合は，罪悪感を書類入れに詰め込んでおかねばならない．これは，キヤノンにおいては，週2回の例外なのである．

キヤノンでは，5時30分までに従業員を帰すため，照明と暖房が消される．これには二つの理由がある．残業をカットするため，そしてもう一つは普通でない理由だ．従業員にもっと赤ちゃんを持つように促しているのである．

経団連の嘆願(plea)による少子化対策の一つ，ということのようですが，経済的に先行きが不安なのに子供をつくる気になるんでしょうか．

記事にはその対策自体の評価は書いていないのですが，結びはなんだか皮肉のようにも取れます．

5時30分の消灯プログラムは(少子化)問題解決に向けたシンプルな一歩である．週2回，全体的に残業を減らせるというメリットもある．従業員であるイワサキ・ミワには不満は無い．彼女は言う．

「後ろめたさを感じず家に早く帰れるなんて，すごいことです」

週に二度，仕事に対して気分良くなれるのであれば，これは現在の世界規模の経済的な混乱の中では希な，良い話である．

私は残業というものとはあまり縁の無い仕事をしているのですが（全くやらないわけではない）普段12時間働いている人が8時間で良くなったらそりゃあ大事件かもしれないですね．

しかし，景気が回復したらまたみんな長時間労働することになるんでしょうねえ……．
